M&S Hackathons is where our team breaks barriers and unleashes creativity. In May 2021, we tackled a customer pain point identified through user interviews. Our idea was born, developed, and presented to the judging panelβall within a thrilling 24 hours of non-stop ideation and creation.
Many customers don't feel excited about shopping at M&S because they don't find it inspiring. They want outfit and styling suggestions to make shopping more engaging. Also, we're not showing how versatile and wearable our products are, making it hard for customers to decide what to buy or shop across different categories.
Whether you have a specific style in mind or need inspiration from scratch, our tool lets you curate the perfect ensemble with ease. Mix and match pieces, experiment with different styles, and tailor outfits to suit your individual taste flawlessly.

The outfit generation process starts with a single product, termed the 'hero', which acts as the focal point for building a complete ensemble. For instance, if the hero product is a shirt, the system selects corresponding templates for other clothing items and accessories that harmonise with it.
These templates span various categories like t-shirts, shorts, sandals, cardigans, necklaces, and bags, providing a framework for cohesive outfit creation.
Using beam search, an iterative algorithm common in natural language processing, the system explores and evaluates diverse combinations of clothing items and accessories to generate outfit options.
The outfit scorer then assesses the compatibility and aesthetic appeal of each combination, considering factors such as colour coordination and style coherence.
By applying beam search and outfit scoring iteratively, the system presents users with multiple outfit options centererd around the hero product and selected templates. This curated selection empowers users to effortlessly assemble complete outfits that reflect their unique style preferences.
